Enzyme Multiplied Immunoassay Technique
(EMIT)
The EMIT is a relatively simple and inexpensive technique. It is also the
most likely to produce a "false positive" result. Pre-employment
drug screens typically first involve an EMIT, although it is not unheard of
to surprise a subject with a GC/MS up front. Unfortunately, there is no standard
procedure to expect in private employment. If you pass the EMIT, you will
not be given the more expensive and accurate GC/MS. If you fail the EMIT,
expect the GC/MS confirmation test, which is extremely sensitive.
