Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS)
GC/MS is considered to be the most definitive method for confirming the presence
of a detected substance in urine and is approximately 100 to 1000 times more
sensitive than EMIT. GC/MS is a two-step process: Gas Chromatography separates
the sample into its constituent parts, while Mass Spectrometry provides the
exact molecular identification of the compounds. GC/MS is utilized to confirm
test results that indicate any level of a controlled substance. It is also
used to screen suspicious samples: if the laboratory suspects masking agents
such as adulterants, dilution through the use of detoxifiers, or a host of
other sample abnormalities, GC/MS will be employed to identify the exact chemicals
compounds present. This is necessary because the EMIT will only indicate whether
something similar to what is being tested for is present. Abstinence or substitution
are the only ways to defeat a GC/MS test.
