Radio Immuno-Assay (RIA)
Also known as Abuscreen, RIA is similar to the EMIT. The primary difference
between the two is that RIA uses radioactive iodine as the detection mechanism
rather than an enzyme. RIA tests are a little more sensitive than the EMIT,
and much harder to fool. The most typical user of the RIA test is the U.S.
Government, especially the military. Some non-government labs use the RIA,
so your pre-employment urine screen may be an RIA rather than an EMIT. Abstinence
or substitution are the only ways to guarantee a negative result with the
RIA test.
