A urinalysis, or traditional urine test, assesses a person's level of health and only will reveal any health complications/ problems a person is having. Another type of urine test is administered to detect drugs in your system. This test will check whether a drug or processed remains of drugs are present in your body.

The World Health Organization (WHO) and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration (SAMHSA) conduct standardized tests that look for various levels of drugs that are known to be commonly abused.

A few of the above mentioned substances are legal drugs that are prescribed by doctors. For this reason, it’s important to consult your doctor about whether or not to discontinue the medication before taking your urine test. If you choose not to discontinue your prescription, your doctor may be able to give you written approval that you can show your employer as proof that you are taking the drug for medical purposes.

It is a common misunderstanding that you can test positive for a drug simply by coming in contact with it but not actually using it (ex. breathing in second hand marijuana smoke). However, with a urine test, there are cut-off levels that will define a specific quantity needed to be found in the body in order for the test to be positive. Theoretically, coming in contact with a substance should not produce a high enough level to test positive. If a person does test positive during a urine test, and that person does not feel like the test results were accurate, they can take a second test to verify the first test results.
