Drug Screen Overview

The screening process in urine drug testing usually occurs at the point of care, the doctor’s office. You will be asked to submit a fresh urine sample that will be tested for specimen validity and an initial screen that will provide the ordering physician some initial insight into a patient’s drug taking behavior.

Specimen validity testing is performed to verify that your urine is fresh human urine, and not a substituted product. Typically, validity testing will involve urine temperature, creatinine content, specific gravity, oxidants (bleach), chromates, and urine pH. If the temperature is outside of the acceptable temperature range, you will be asked to submit a second sample, and potentially be required to have observed collection. Patient specimens will be tagged as adulterated if the validation parameters fail or if adulterants are present.

Validated specimens that are determined to be free of adulterant are subjected to screening using either a panel cup or an enzyme immunosorbent assays (EIA screen) using a liquid chemistry analyzer. Both the point of care device and the EIA screen rely on the interaction of an antibody with a chemical target (drug). These methods provide an indirect, qualitative determination of drug concentrations in urine. They are an excellent rapid screening method for determining the class of drug present (opioid, benzodiazepine, amphetamine, etc.). All screening results are reported as positive or negative.
