How Long Does a Drug Stay in My Urine?

Fortunately, many drugs don't stay in your urine for a long time. Read more about how long specific drugs are detectable in urine.

For some people, the words "we drug test" instill fear and panic. They wonder whether they'll be able to pass and get the job. Fortunately, many drugs don't stay in your urine for a long time, and there are ways to ensure a clean sample is given.

Keep in mind, though, that every person is different. Your fat composition, age, gender, how much you used, how often you used, route of administration, and how well your body metabolizes the drug play a role in how long it's in your system for a urine test. Therefore, these are merely generalizations and may not apply to every person. The best way to reduce the chance of a positive drug test is to avoid drugs.

Heroin

Heroin is an opiate derived from morphine. While there's no gold standard for the potency of heroin, it tends to be between two and five times more potent than morphine. Nowadays, it's often combined with stronger opiates like carfentanil and fentanyl -- the two most potent opiates -- to reduce the production cost. On average, heroin will stay in your system for one to three days in a urine sample.

Cocaine

Cocaine is classified as a stimulant. It's derived from the coca plant in South America. This drug affects the dopamine receptors in the brain and prohibits the reuptake of dopamine, which causes higher than normal levels in the body to cause the "high." Typically, cocaine will show up two to three days after use on a urine test.

Marijuana

Besides alcohol and nicotine, marijuana is the most commonly used drug. It comes from the cannabis plant. Specifically, the THC in the plant, also known as tetrahydrocannabinol, is what causes the high. The THC is found in the resin of the buds and leaves. It's primarily in the female plants as opposed to the males. The male plants still have THC; however, it's not in as high of a concentration. Marijuana may stay in your system for a urine test for anywhere between one and seven days.

Meth

Methamphetamine, also known as meth, is a stimulant drug. While people figured out how to make the substance in home labs, it's also a prescription medication that's sold under the name "Desoxyn." Doctors prescribe it for weight loss and ADHD. Even as a prescription drug, people have been known to abuse this substance. Most of the time, meth lasts in your system two to three days.

MDMA

The abbreviation for MDMA is the acronym for methylenedioxymethamphetamine and often goes by the street names "Molly" or "ecstasy." It's a psychoactive drug that causes increased pleasure and energy. Originally, Merck created and marketed this drug in the 1970s but later it gained recognition as a street drug. Two to four days is how long this drug usually stays in a person's system.

Within a week, most drugs are non-detectable in your urine. However, that doesn't help much if you're told you have to take a drug test tomorrow without warning. It also doesn't help when you consider that this isn't the same for everyone, so any substance could be in your system much longer than noted above.
