What is Substitution
Because substitute urine is real urine, there are very few indicators labs can use to identify its origin. Even hormone differences that might indicate differences between male and female urine are subtle and generally not performed by drug testing labs.
Substitution is really as simple as it sounds: substituting your urine sample with urine from someone else. If your workplace takes a very relaxed policy on collecting urine samples for drug testing and you have a trustworthy friend who is also drug free and willing to cooperate, urine substitution can be a very effective way to pass a drug test.
Finding someone who you can trust to help you out can be a challenge, especially when it comes time to collect the sample. This is why a number of commercial solutions are ready to help. Substitute urine is usually sold in one of two forms: frozen or powdered / dehydrated. The advantage to buying substitute urine is that it usually comes with supplies to help you beat a test even under observation.
Can labs detect substitute urine?
Because substitute urine is real urine, there are very few indicators labs can use to identify its origin. Even hormone differences that might indicate differences between male and female urine are subtle and generally not performed by drug testing labs.
The main red flag for substitute urine is temperature. If the collector receives a sample that is cold or too hot, it is likely that your sample will be rejected and you may be required to provide another sample under close observation. This is why urine suppliers often provide a heating element and temperature strip: so that you can be sure the sample you provide is a natural temperature.
Does urine substitution work under supervision?
Fortunately, providing a urine sample while being watched is usually just as awkward for the collector as it is for you. This gives you some wiggle room that makes substitution, even under supervision, possible. Commercial offerings may include an IV tube or prosthesis to help with urine sample collection while being watched.
The most important thing to keep in mind when providing a urine sample while being watched is to remain calm. If you are using an unfamiliar product, it is best to try it first at home to be sure you understand and are comfortable using the product. If you are using a frozen product, you need to know how long it takes to thaw and warm to body temperature. If using a dehydrated product, be sure you know how much water to add and how much time you need to prepare. Rest assured, other than completely abstaining from any drug use, urine substitution is your best chance of beating a drug test!
